Newry scratched their seven year itch when they lifted the Mid Ulster cup for the first time in seven years with a 2-1 win over Annagh Utd. Newry were well on top in the first half and scored twice. Brian Kelly converted from close range and Richard Clarke followed up with a cracking second.
City should have had a third in the early minutes of the 2nd half. Kelly hit the bar with a piledriver and Bo Willis converted the rebound but was harshly adjudged to have fouled the keeper. It was all too easy for Newry at this stage and Juggernaut Kelly sought to entertain himself with a spot of WWE wrestling on the Annagh number 7. Oh how we laughed. We should of known that it's never easy with us and sure enough a long ball from defence set an Annagh forward free and he made it 2-1. Suddenly Annagh grew in confidence and shed their 'rabbit in the headlights' first half performance. Still, we had plenty of chances to finish them off and King, Clarke and McArdle in particular went close. There was the obligatory late scare when Goose saved well and Hudson blocked which was quite amazing in the context of how we had been cruising for most of the game.
So, a first trophy for Gerry Flynn and five wins on the trot. Captain Clarke was awarded the man of the match award and Darren King and Dee Curran must of run him close for the honour. Congratulations to all concerned. Next up is a difficult trip to Cliftonville on Easter Saturday (3pm).
